March 7, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm UTC-8

993 Orchid Road, Camano Island, WA 98282

The Camano Schoolhouse presents Women’s Work Productions in a 30-minute preview of Carried by the Current, an award-winning play about The Women’s Commonwealth of Belton, Texas. In 1866, in a bid for independence, these women sold eggs, butter and cheese, formed a Common Fund, and then started doing the town’s laundry. This menial labor on the part of married women angered the townspeople of Belton so the women moved in together, creating the prototype for the first safe house. From there they built and ran The Central Hotel Company which became so successful, they changed the entire community’s perception of women’s role in society. But what led to their bid for independence? Join us to find out more about this captivating story from history. Entry free: donations welcomed.
